5 Common Spider Species That Can Infest Homes

Spiders are an extremely common household pest. They manage to crop up in any ignored area, filling corners with their webs. This pest manages to invoke fear and a deep sense of discomfort, owing to its unique structure and threatening appearance. It’s important to know that most spider species are quite harmless. They do not pose any real threat to a big animal like humans, and mostly prefer to stay out of the way to trap occasional insects and flies. It’s their unsettling presence that causes concern among people.

Most pest control services can easily handle a spider problem. However, only the most expert-backed pest control in Portland can effectively deal with spiders of all kinds:

    American House Spider

The American House Spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum) is one of the most common spiders found in homes. These spiders are small, with a body length of about 1/4 inch, and have a rounded abdomen. They are typically gray or brown with a pattern of chevrons on their body. American House Spiders are known for their messy, tangled webs, which they build in corners, under furniture, and in other undisturbed areas. They prefer dark, secluded spaces and are often found in basements, attics, and garages.

    Domestic House Spider

The Domestic House Spider (Tegenaria domestica) is a frequent intruder. These spiders are larger than American House Spiders, with a body length of up to 1/2 inch. They are brown with distinctive dark markings on their body and legs. Domestic House Spiders are known for their funnel-shaped webs, which they build in dark, moist environments such as basements, crawl spaces, and cellars.

    Cobweb Spider

Cobweb Spiders (Theridiidae family) are a diverse group of spiders known for their irregular, sticky webs. These spiders are usually small, with a body length of about 1/3 inch, and come in various colors, including brown, black, and yellow. They often build their webs in high corners, window frames, and other undisturbed areas.

    Cellar Spiders

Cellar spiders (Pholcus phalangioides), are easily recognizable by their long, thin legs and small body. They are usually light brown or gray and build loose, irregular webs in dark, damp areas such as basements, crawl spaces, and attics. Despite their intimidating appearance, cellar spiders are harmless to humans.

    Yellow Sac Spider

Yellow Sac Spiders (Cheiracanthium inclusum) are small, with a body length of about 1/4 inch, and are pale yellow or greenish. Unlike other spiders that build webs, Yellow Sac Spiders create silk sacs for resting during the day and hunt actively at night. They can be found in various locations within the home, including walls, ceilings, and under furniture.

A pest control professional can help identify where exactly a spider prefers to hide – treating that spot to completely negate their presence. Additionally, they can also identify what other insects and pests are attracting a spider to your home. Remember, spiders focus on trapping and eating other insects – their presence in your home means consistent insect presence as well. Reaching out to a pest control professional can help you swiftly identify and handle all these issues – guaranteeing a safe and happy home!
